When her husband wants a baby, their marriage dissolves she nearly starves herself to death. Alice marries a doctor and does photography. While he doesn’t really want to leave Alice, he does. Mattia is accepted into a prestigious math program in Switzerland. Alice and Mattia are drawn to each other in high school possibly because they recognize the trauma in each other’s souls. He grows up trying to calculate his way through the world and cutting himself to feel something. He leaves her in the park on the way to a birthday part and she’s gone when he comes back for her. Mattia has a twin who is mentally disabled. She grows up anorexic and desperately trying to fit in with the cool kids. Alice, forced to ski by her father, breaks her leg off on her own in the fog. Both experience traumas as a child that affected their whole lives. Long version: In the book, we follow the lives of Alice and Mattia.
